Tipping in restaurants is not obligatory, but it is customary, serving as a significant portion of the income for many service industry employees. Yet, when a patron is dissatisfied with the service, they are within their rights to withhold a tip. However, what transpired in the photo goes beyond mere non-tipping—an act of unadulterated rudeness.

Instead of leaving a monetary tip, the patron opted to convey a disparaging message on the check: “Try a different job.” Such a display of incivility is both unwarranted and hurtful. While dissatisfaction with a meal or service is valid, it does not justify targeting waitstaff with a snide comment.
