Myth: You Shouldn’t Use Your Phone When At The Pump
Signs advising against phone use at gas pumps are becoming less common but can still be spotted occasionally. This myth goes back to a time when early cell phones had large antennas and the potential to produce a spark. However, today’s phones are safe to use at the pump.

Extensive testing, including on the TV show “Mythbusters,” has shown that modern cell phones don’t generate enough spark to ignite gasoline fumes. So, while it’s always wise to stay alert and focused when fueling up, you can safely check your messages without fear of starting a fire.
