#48: Lead Makeup
Throughout history, beauty standards and practices have evolved significantly. Today, we possess a deeper understanding of the health risks associated with certain beauty products and practices. However, in the past, people often used substances that we now recognize as harmful. In the 18th century, some women incorporated lead into their makeup. This practice might seem baffling to us now, but it reflects the beauty ideals of the time and the limited knowledge about the adverse effects of such substances. These women willingly exposed themselves to a substance that posed substantial health risks, all in the pursuit of adhering to the beauty ideals of their time.

However, the consequences of lead exposure, such as lead poisoning, skin damage, and other health ailments, were largely unknown or disregarded. Fortunately, contemporary beauty products and cosmetics have evolved significantly. Our understanding of the potential dangers posed by various ingredients has grown exponentially. Today, safety and well-being are paramount in the beauty industry, with strict regulations in place to ensure that products are free from harmful substances. The shift towards safer beauty practices reflects our increased awareness of the potential risks and our commitment to prioritizing health while pursuing beauty ideals.
