#30: Crafting the Right Hobbies for Small Talk
Engaging in small talk about one’s hobbies can sometimes feel like navigating a minefield of expectations. When asked about your interests, listing activities like watching television, napping, and enjoying a drink or two is not quite kosher. There’s an unspoken pressure to sound like a fully functional adult who relishes intellectual pursuits and maintains an active lifestyle.
In my case, I find solace in reading and crocheting, admittedly rather leisurely pastimes. Nevertheless, these hobbies often garner respect and interest from others. But secretly, I yearn for the freedom to embrace napping and the occasional libation as legitimate pastimes. Perhaps once my children have flown the nest, I can restructure my hobbies to align more with the mainstream pie chart on the right.
