#31: The Value of Work
Having experienced both sides of the employment spectrum, I can attest to the absolute truth in this chart. While unemployment may eliminate the stress of work-related responsibilities, it can also lead to pervasive boredom. A job provides a sense of purpose and contribution to society, even if it comes with its own challenges, such as deadlines and stress.
This phenomenon explains why many retirees choose to volunteer their time. Although the retirement dream may involve basking on a beach and enjoying the fruits of one’s savings, the novelty often wears off quickly. Playing bingo and lounging becomes less fulfilling, prompting retirees to seek ways to stay engaged and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
