Back in 2001, Eminem had the LGBT community seeing red over the homophobic lyrics of his album, The Marshall Mathers LP. When he was slated to perform at the Grammy Awards that year, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) wasn’t having it and went on to protest his presence.

In a surprising turn of events, Eminem was paired with the openly gay legend Elton John for a rendition of “Stan.” As GLAAD picketed outside, tensions ran high.
