Strange Times
It’s hard to imagine that when we live in an era where we see Kim Kardashian’s butt more than we see our actual family. Sadly, that was the reality for most women in the 20th century. In an age where fashion and freedom of expression seem boundless, it’s quite astonishing to look back and realize the strict societal norms that women had to contend with in the not-so-distant past. The clothes they wore were not merely fashion statements but also symbols of societal expectations and constraints. It serves as a poignant reminder of how far we’ve come in terms of gender equality and personal expression.

Although the notion of women getting arrested due to their attire appears outdated and absurd, regrettably, it remains a reality for many around the world. In a recent incident in August 2022, authorities in Rwanda arrested a woman named Liliane Mugabekazi for wearing what they deemed “shameful” clothing. She now confronts the possibility of up to two years in jail on charges of “public indecency.”
