The Transformation of the Iconic Hollywood Sign
The iconic Hollywood sign is familiar to all, but its history is not as romantic as one might imagine. The beloved Los Angeles landmark, overlooking the Hollywood Hills, initially read “Hollywoodland.”

This iconic sign, considered one of America’s most renowned landmarks, was erected in 1923 to promote a local housing development bearing the same name. In 1949, the Los Angeles City Parks Department decided to refurbish the sign and remove the “land,” encompassing the entire district, rather than just the neighborhood. Over the years, the sign has undergone several restorations.
