Colorado’s Animas River Turns Yellow
Colorado’s Animas River, the “river of lost souls,” suffered a mine waste spill in 2015 due to mishandling at the inactive Gold King Mine. This incident turned the river’s waters a murky, cloudy yellow, resulting in aquatic life’s disappearance.

Since the accidental mine waste spill, the river has been closed to the public. Fortunately, the Colorado River System consists of numerous waterways, and signs of recovery have emerged.
