New York’s Mars Bar: An End of an Era
In the heart of Manhattan’s East Village, Mars Bar once stood as an iconic subversive local pub, providing respite from the gentrification sweeping the neighborhood. A beloved establishment among longtime residents, the bar, and its owner, Hank Penza, held a special place in the hearts of patrons.

As the neighborhood changed around it, Mars Bar remained an oasis of authenticity. However, in 2011, the iconic dive bar closed its doors, making way for a new apartment building. Its closure marked the end of an era and left a void in the local community.
