New Island Emerges in the Red Sea Following a Devastating Volcanic Eruption in 2011
In December 2011, a volcanic eruption occurred in the heart of the Red Sea, resulting in the creation of a new island. This eruption gave rise to lava flows, billowing smoke, and the birth of an island. The white clouds seen in the lower photograph consist of a combination of volcanic ash and water vapor. Local fishermen reported witnessing lava fountains reaching heights of up to 100 feet, an awe-inspiring and terrifying sight.

Satellite imagery indicated that this eruption differed significantly from previous ones in the region. The solidification of lava on land suggested that this new island was likely to endure. Although the island expanded rapidly initially, erosion has since caused it to shrink in size.
