Residing in the same neighborhood as a local dentist, this storyteller discovered that the dentist’s house was the least favored spot in the entire community during Halloween. The reason? Instead of offering candy, this dentist gave out pencils adorned with his office’s contact number. It’s a logical choice, as we all know that dentists can’t be seen distributing candy on Halloween.

While adults might perceive this as a clever guerrilla marketing strategy, children tend to view it differently. Receiving a pencil for Halloween was on par with receiving a spoonful of dirt. One year, our storyteller recounted their brazen act of tossing one of the dentist’s pencils onto the roof in frustration. Take that, dentist! It was a rebellious act of Halloween candy defiance, a symbolic gesture of resistance against the well-intentioned but unpopular dental-themed treats that sometimes found their way into trick-or-treat bags.
