Schoolyard Conspiracy
This story presents two possible interpretations: one of eerie intrigue and the other of a well-executed prank. The storyteller, a substitute teacher, frequently worked at a Catholic school housed in an ancient building. As expected, the building had an eerie old basement that fueled rumors and apprehension. One day, the storyteller noticed a young girl loudly conversing with someone in the basement, prompting them to investigate.

Upon descending the stairwell, the teacher found the basement empty. However, the girl explained that she had communicated with a man in the basement. This left the storyteller feeling a mix of terror and curiosity. They decided to corroborate the existence of this mysterious man by consulting other students, who confirmed the girl’s account. Some even claimed to have spoken to nuns who hadn’t been at the school for decades. The enigma persisted: was the school genuinely haunted, or were these children expertly pranking the new substitutes? The storyteller leaned toward the former explanation.
