The Caves of Altamira

The Caves of Altamira in northern Spain are home to some of the world’s oldest and most intricate prehistoric cave paintings, dating back over 35,000 years. These charcoal and ochre drawings depict bison, deer, and other animals, offering a glimpse into the lives of early humans.

However, due to the fragile nature of the paintings, human breath and body heat began to degrade them, leading authorities to close the caves to the public in 2002. Today, visitors can explore a replica of the caves, but the original artwork remains off-limits, preserved for future generations.
